Split edit

Also known as audio split edit.

An edit in which the picture and corresponding audio change at different times.

In practice

J-cuts lead with incoming audio and L-cuts carry outgoing audio forward, allowing scene transitions to be motivated by sound rather than simultaneous hard cuts.
