J-cut
Also known as J cut, audio lead.
A split edit in which audio from the incoming shot or scene begins before its picture appears.
In practice
The technique can anticipate a new place, speaker, or idea and smooth a transition. The name comes from the shape formed by offset picture and sound edits on a timeline.
