Placing the camera across the established axis of action so screen direction or eyelines reverse, potentially confusing spatial continuity.

In practice

The 180-degree rule is a continuity tool, not an absolute law. A production can cross deliberately by motivating the move, using a neutral shot, or re-establishing geography.
