Condenser microphone backplate

Also known as capsule backplate.

The rigid conductive plate positioned close to a condenser microphone diaphragm to form a variable capacitor.

In practice

Sound moves the diaphragm and changes its spacing from the backplate, varying the capacitance and producing the audio signal. The capsule design, polarization method, and active impedance-conversion electronics are parts of the microphone’s operating system and should not be confused with its pickup pattern.
