Cucoloris

Also known as cookie, cucaloris, cuculoris, celo, cello cucoloris.

An irregular patterned screen placed in a light path to cast broken shadows and create texture on a subject or background.

In practice

Hard cookies use opaque cutouts for defined patterns; mesh or “cello” versions create softer breakup. Distance from the source and subject, focus, and beam size control the result.
