Check the gate
Also known as gate check.
A film-camera instruction to inspect the aperture and film path for hair, dirt, emulsion, or damage that could spoil the photographed take.
In practice
The check was especially important before moving on from a setup because contamination could affect every frame. Digital-camera crews may inspect sensor, mount, and recorded image instead, but should not use the phrase as proof that no defect exists.
