Bobbinet

Also known as bobbinette, black net, net fabric.

A fine open mesh, commonly black, used in nets and overhead fabrics to reduce light with limited change to beam quality.

In practice

Single and double layers provide different reductions, while distance and focus affect whether the mesh pattern becomes visible. The fabric must be tensioned and secured in its intended frame.
