Sync slate
Also known as clap slate, sound slate.
A slate with a visible clap and corresponding sound used to align separately recorded picture and audio.
In practice
The board identifies the take while the clap supplies a precise audiovisual event; timecode can assist but does not eliminate disciplined slating and metadata.
