Microphone self-noise
Also known as equivalent noise level, EIN of a microphone.
The equivalent acoustic noise level produced by a microphone and its internal electronics when no intended sound is present.
In practice
Self-noise is especially relevant when recording quiet dialogue, Foley, ambience, or distant sources with substantial gain. Compare manufacturer measurements made with the same weighting and method; the microphone is only one contributor to the complete recorder, preamplifier, wireless, and environment noise floor.
