Lighting Programmer
Also known as Lighting Console Programmer, Dimmer Programmer, Board Operator.
A Lighting Programmer builds and operates the control system that turns the Gaffer’s lighting cues into repeatable intensity, color, effect, and timing changes. They patch fixtures, address DMX or network devices, program cues and groups, troubleshoot control, and document the show so complex lighting can be reproduced reliably.
Modern sets may contain hundreds of individually controlled emitters, practicals, pixels, moving fixtures, and wireless nodes. The programmer creates a usable control model for that system.
The role is technical but serves visual intent: cue timing, fades, color, flicker, chases, and interactive effects must support the shot rather than call attention to the console.
Pre-production responsibilities
- Plan control architecture, fixture profiles, addressing, network, redundancy, and show-file conventions.
Production responsibilities
- Program and run cues while maintaining stable control and backups.
