Lamp Operator
Also known as Lighting Technician, Electric, Set Lighting Technician.
A Lamp Operator is a set-lighting technician who places, powers, focuses, controls, moves, and wraps lighting fixtures under the Gaffer and Best Boy Electric. They run cable, set stands, add diffusion or accessories assigned to electric, troubleshoot fixtures, and execute lighting changes safely around the active set.
The role is highly hands-on and combines electrical safety with visual precision. A small adjustment to height, angle, focus, color, or control can change the photographed result.
Lamp Operators coordinate constantly with grips, camera, art, locations, and sound because fixtures, cable, heat, noise, and movement share limited space.
Pre-production responsibilities
- Load, test, organize, and pre-rig fixtures, cable, control, and expendables.
Production responsibilities
- Carry out fixture, cable, focus, color, and control assignments for each setup.
Post-production responsibilities
- Power down, wrap, inspect, inventory, and report damaged equipment.
