B-roll

Also known as B roll, supplementary footage, cutaway footage.

Supplementary footage used to illustrate, contextualize, cover edits, or provide visual alternatives to the primary action or interview material.

In practice

Useful B-roll is planned for story function, continuity, screen direction, and editorial duration rather than collected as random scenery. In multi-camera history, the term also referred to secondary rolls or sources.
